Epoxy vs Polyaspartic: Which Garage Floor Coating Is Right for You?

Both beat bare concrete by a mile, but they're not the same. Here's a plain-English breakdown to help you choose.

Two coatings dominate the garage-floor world: epoxy and polyaspartic. Both look fantastic and both leave big-box floor paint in the dust, but they behave differently. Here's how to pick.

What is epoxy?

Epoxy is a two-part resin that bonds to a properly ground concrete slab and builds a thick, hard, glossy layer. It comes in solid colours, decorative flake blends and show-stopping metallics, so it's the most versatile way to transform a garage. The trade-offs: it takes a few days to reach full hardness, and standard epoxy can amber (yellow) slightly under heavy direct sunlight.

What is polyaspartic?

Polyaspartic is a newer resin that cures far faster, resists UV so it won't yellow, and stands up to abrasion and chemicals even better than epoxy. We most often use it as a high-performance clear topcoat over a flake or metallic base. You can usually walk on it the same evening and park on it the next day. It sits at the premium end of the price range.

So which should you choose?

  • Best value: a flake or solid-colour epoxy floor.
  • Fastest return to service, winter installs, or lots of sun: add a polyaspartic topcoat.
  • Best of both worlds: a flake or metallic base sealed with a polyaspartic clear coat.
